Schoology integration with VB Courseware is available for Site License customers. (It is not yet available for Courseware adoption customers and bulk code purchasers.) If you are a customer interested in trying out this integration, follow all the steps below. These steps can be completed by anyone with administrator access to both Courseware and Schoology.
If at any point you need assistance during this setup, contact us at support@visiblebody.com.
Administrator Setup
Things to know before you begin
In order to successfully complete the Visible Body (LTI 1.3) setup within Schoology, you will need the help of a Visible Body Courseware administrator as well as a Schoology LMS administrator. They can be the same person. If you don’t have a Courseware administrator account associated with your institution’s Visible Body account, please request one.
You will also need an active Visible Body site license set up before you can complete the setup. Please see our Sales or Customer Experience Team to do this.
Part 1: Install Visible Body (LTI 1.3) from the Schoology App Store
- In Schoology, navigate to the App Center.
- Under Categories select Science.
- Scroll to Visible Body (LTI 1.3) and click it.
- On the app page, select Install LTI 1.3 App. Click Agree.
You now have the app available to use in Schoology.
If you'd like to register the Schoology integration manually, contact the support team for a walkthrough of those steps.
Part 2: Manage Placement and Confirm Setup
With the tool set up in Schoology, you can now manage placements on the platform (if not already installed to All Courses). We recommend adding Visible Body (LTI 1.3) directly into a course.
- Navigate to a course where you would like to add Visible Body.
- On the left hand menu, click the link to Install Your App(s).
- "Visible Body (LTI 1.3)" should appear as an application to install. Select it and click Submit.
- "Visible Body (LTI 1.3)" should now be available in your course as a navigation item. Click to access the Visible Body 1.3 Course Home and start the account pairing process.
- You will be asked to sign in with a Visible Body Administrator account.
- Then confirm that you will set up this integration as a site license. Please read through the information and confirm that you agree. Select Connect when done.
- You will see a notice confirming that you have successfully connected your institution with Visible Body.
To finish setup:
- You will need to link a Visible Body Courseware course to the Schoology LTI to complete this integration. You can choose a sample course or create your own from the course linking page. Select Manage Sync Options from the Course Home, or select the settings icon within the Assignment Library to link a course. Once any course has been linked, this integration is ready to go. Note, your instructors will link their own courses.
After completing this process, you and your instructors can use Visible Body (LTI 1.3) in this or any other course. If you would like your instructors to add Visible Body (LTI 1.3) into their courses themselves, make sure they have the requisite permission within Schoology and have them follow the instructor process below.
Instructor Setup
Things to know before you begin
This section of the article assumes your administrator has already registered and managed the placement of Visible Body (LTI 1.3) in Schoology. If they have not, they will need to follow the instructions for Administrator setup.
Each Visible Body assignment deep-linked (graded or ungraded) to Schoology will create a column in the Schoology gradebook. Scores from your students will automatically update in the gradebook as your students work on those activities. You can edit the activity points as you add the links or set activities not to count toward your grades. You can edit any Visible Body scores in the Schoology gradebook, but you will need to update the changes in Courseware as well.
Important: By default, anyone in a course who isn’t the course creator is counted by Schoology as a Learner. To add additional instructors, an admin will need to change teacher or staff access to “course administrator”. Otherwise, they’ll encounter role mismatch scenarios.
Link an Assignment and Give Your Students Access
With the tool set up in Schoology, you can now link your Visible Body assignments directly in your Schoology course and have scores report automatically to your gradebook. To link to assignments, follow these steps:
- In Materials, navigate to the Add Materials dropdown
- Click Add Materials and select Visible Body’s 1.3 assignment library on the right side of the dropdown. If you haven’t yet signed in and linked your Visible Body course, you will be prompted to do so. See below for more information on this step.
- Back in the Assignment Library, check off the assignments and activities you want to link.
Select Link Assignments and a deep link to your assignments will appear in the course! These assignments will appear in your gradebook when you continue editing the assignment with a grade category.
Log into Courseware and Link Your Courses
Once you’ve placed Visible Body (LTI 1.3) in your course or deep linked an assignment, select the Visible Body material to log into Courseware and complete the setup.
Visible Body (LTI 1.3) should be available in your course’s left hand navigation already. Your administrator may have named this tool something else. Please check with your administrator if you are having trouble finding it. Additionally, if your administrator has given you permission to add applications to your course, you can add Visible Body (LTI 1.3) yourself by following the steps in the Administrator Setup section above
- Once you select Visible Body (LTI 1.3), you’ll be prompted to sign in using your Visible Body email and password. You’ll only have to do this once in Schoology.
- Select the Visible Body course you want to associate with your Schoology course. If you don’t have one set up yet, you can choose to create one from the course list.
- Click Link Course. There will be a confirmation message asking if you are sure. Click OK.
- Your course is now linked. From the Visible Body (LTI 1.3) Homepage, selecting Go To Courseware will take you and your students to the associated course in Courseware.
Add Course Home
When using the assignment library you will be prompted to link your courses. If you haven’t used the assignment library you can sign in and access Courseware through our course homepage. To add Course Home:
- In Materials, navigate to the Add Materials dropdown
- Click Add Materials and select Visible Body’s 1.3 Course Home on the right side of the dropdown.
- Select Save.
Adding and Transferring Students & Instructors
To ensure students and co-instructors can access the Visible Body materials in your course, add them to your Schoology course or section. You no longer need to use the Invite People feature in the Courseware platform to do this. Once added, they can click the Visible Body (LTI 1.3) homepage for immediate access.
To transfer your students, make sure that the students have been transferred to the correct course in Courseware first, then transfer them into the corresponding course in the LMS and students will still have Courseware access.
If you transfer your students in the LMS before transferring them in Courseware, they will have access to both courses. They will need to be dropped from the initial course in Courseware to ensure they’re only in the course you intend.
Unlink Your Courseware and Schoology Courses
If you've accidentally linked the wrong Courseware course to your Schoology course, you can follow these steps to unlink your courses.
- Navigate to the Visible Body (LTI 1.3) homepage and select Manage Sync Options. Alternatively, navigate to the Visible Body (LTI 1.3) assignment library and click the settings icon.
- On the subpage that shows the currently connected course, select Unlink Course. A confirmation message will ask if you are sure. Click yes.
Now that your Courseware course is unlinked from Schoology you may connect a new Courseware course to your Schoology course by selecting the “Connect Course” option that will appear on “Manage Sync Options” after unlinking a course is complete. Selecting this option will bring you back to the course connection process. You can also connect the existing Courseware course to another Schoology course.
