This article explains how to use Courseware’s Individual Student Override features, including modifying due dates, number of attempts, and grades.
Once your students have begun working on assignments, you may need to override due dates, the number of attempts, or grades for individual students. To do this, log in to your Courseware dashboard, choose your course, and click “Gradebook” in the left-hand menu.
How do I extend a deadline for one student?
In the Gradebook:
- Select the name of the student for whom you would like to override a due date.

Select the grey arrow in the upper right corner of the assignment row to open the dropdown menu.
- In the dropdown, select “Modify Quiz Details.”
- In the pop-up that appears, select the “Choose Date” field and choose a new due date using the calendar widget that appears.
- If you want to notify your student of the change, select the “Send notification email to student” box.
- Select “Save” to apply your changes.
How do I change the number of attempts on one student's quiz?
In the Gradebook:
- Select the name of the student whose number of attempts you want to change.
- Select the grey arrow in the upper right corner of the assignment row to open the dropdown menu.
- In the dropdown, select “Modify Quiz Details.”
- In the popup that appears, select the “Modify remaining attempts” dropdown and choose the number of attempts you would like to give to the student.
- If you want to notify your student of the change, select the “Send notification email to student” box.
- Select “Save” to apply your changes.
How do I override a grade?
In the Gradebook:
- Select the name of the student whose grade you would like to modify.

Select the grey arrow in the upper right corner of the row assignment row to open the dropdown menu.
- In the dropdown, select “Manually Change a Grade.”
- Enter the new grade in the pop-up.
- Select “Save” to apply your changes.
Other things to know about Individual Override Features
- When you make a change, the status of the assignment changes to “Modified” for the student.
- Even if you don’t email them, your student will still be notified of your changes on the Assignments page with a red notification bubble.

If you edit a published assignment and update the due date or number of attempts, individual student modifications do not stick. Every student in the course will get the new due date and/or the new number of attempts.
