In Physiology & Pathology, you can see what your heart looks like when it's resting and when you're exercising. Follow the instructions below to learn how to see your heart rate data in action.
How do I use the "My Heart Rate" lesson?
You can manually add your heart rate data to the “My Heart Rate” lesson. First, go to the "Units" tab and select "Cardiovascular" from the menu. Then select "My Heart Rate" to open the lesson.
Now that you've opened the lesson:
- Select the heart icon in the Content Box.
- You’ll be prompted to enter your heart rate in the text box.
- Select “Set BPM.”
- Watch the heart beat based on your heart rate data. See your heart rate shown in the Content Box and the BPM dial. Listen to what your heart sounds like. Select the ECG icon to see how your heartbeat looks on the graph.
- Use the BPM dial to change the heart rate. You can use the dial to find your heart rate—marked by a heart icon next to it—again.
- Tap the heart icon in the Content Box again to enter a new heart rate.
As you move through the lesson, you can follow the steps above to enter your resting and workout heart rates. For more information about how to measure your heart rate at various levels of activity, check out our heart lab!
Can I sync my heart rate from the Health app?
Yes! If you have an iPhone that supports the Health app, and you have heart rate data from the last 30 days, you can sync your data by following the instructions below.
- Open the "My Heart Rate" lesson.
- Select the heart icon in the Content Box.
- Select the "Access Health Data" button in the pop-up.
- If this is the first time you're syncing your data, another pop-up will appear to allow P&P access to your Health data. To fully utilize the sync feature, select "Turn All Categories On" and then select "Allow."
- See your most recently recorded heart rate in the Content Box and the BPM dial and watch your heart beat.
As you move through the lesson, select the heart icon again each time to sync your resting and workout heart rates and then select "Access Health Data" in the pop-up.

What permissions need to be enabled to sync from the Health app?
To fully use the heart rate sync feature, you must allow P&P access to the following:
- Heart Rate
- Resting Heart Rate
- Workouts
If you pick and choose to enable some of these, you will still be able to sync your heart rate for some parts of the lesson, but not for all of them. Allowing access to all three is recommended.
How do I change my settings to enable syncing from the Health app?
If you would like to change your settings to enable P&P to read your Health app data, you can follow these instructions from Apple and then:
- Below “Privacy” select “Apps”
- Select “P&P” from the list
- Use the toggles to allow P&P to read your Health app data
Why can't I sync my health data?
When trying to sync your health data, you may see an error that says “No valid health data detected.” P&P can only read health data from the last 30 days, so if your health data is more than a month old, sync your Apple Watch or manually input some new health data!
If you do have data from the last 30 days, you may need to enable permissions.
