This article is for students using Courseware. It includes common troubleshooting questions, with answers!
I cannot join a course
The two most common problems are (1) You need the correct instructor link and (2) You are in an LMS and third party cookies are off.
(1) Ask your instructor for the Courseware course link.
If you are accessing a Courseware course for the first time you may need to click on a link sent to you by the instructor. Clicking on this link enrolls you, gives you access to assignments and adds you to the Grade book.
(2) Turn off third-party cookies.
If the link provided by your instructor is posted in a learning management system (such as Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, etc..), you may need to enable third-party cookies in order to successfully join your course. The following steps can be used in different browsers to enable third-party cookies:
Google Chrome: Some versions of Chrome include the option to not block third party cookies.
- Open Chrome preferences
- Select Settings
- Select Show Advanced Settings
- Under Privacy, select Content Settings
- Make sure "Block third-party cookies and site data" is not checked
Safari
- Open Safari and in the top left corner of your screen select Safari
- In the dropdown, select Preferences
- In the preference window, select the Privacy option
- Under "Block cookies" select Never
- Be sure "Prevent cross-site tracking" is unchecked.
- Your browser should now accept all third party cookies
Microsoft Edge
-
In the top right corner of the Edge browser, select (…) and click Settings
-
In Settings, click “Cookies and Site Permissions”
-
Click “Manage and delete cookies and site data”
-
Turn off “Block third-party cookies”
I cannot access my course
Even if you've taken a Courseware course in previous semesters, the new course will not automatically appear your Courseware account. If you are at a school with a Courseware LMS integration follow these steps. If you are at a school using Courseware without an LMS integration follow these steps.
I am getting a third-party cookie error
The error message "Enable third party cookies" appears when third-party cookies are disabled in your browser. To clear this error message, you can:
- Change your browser settings to enable third-party cookies.
- Try an alternate supported browser, such as Chrome or Edge. Please check that this alternate browser is up-to-date and also has third-party cookies enabled.
- Note: Courseware is not supported by iOS and Android.
Animations do not play
If you are trying to play animations in a Visible Body web-based app and are using Safari, you need to set the browser to allow auto-play animations.
Take the following steps:
- Open app in Safari
- Open Preferences
- Select Websites
- Select Auto-Play
- For the website you are using, change the dropdown from "Stop media with sound" to "Allow All Auto-Play"
Quiz does not launch
There are a few reasons this might be occurring:
(1) First, check that your PC and browser meet the system requirements for Courseware.
If the laptop you are not does not meet these system requirements, try a different computer.
(2) If your laptop does meets the specifications, try restarting your computer and using the browser only for Courseware:
- Shut down your computer. Wait 10 seconds.
- Restart your computer.
Once your system is back up, run one browser window with only Courseware open.
(3) Try a different browser or clearing your cache:
- Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge as your browser
- Clear your cookies and cache for the timeframe:
- "All Time" in Chrome
- "All Time" in Edge
- Disable your browser extensions in Chrome and Edge.
(4) Free up CPU and bandwidth
It is best to keep this window open/active in the foreground until your quiz is completed. Try closing all other tabs and browser windows.
Why is my quiz score zero in the Gradebook?
1. You ran out of time or the quiz date passed while you were taking the quiz
When you select the "Take Quiz!" button, the quiz attempt starts, and will be automatically submitted to the Gradebook when you complete it. A quiz score of zero could result if your instructor has decided not to offer partial credit, and you either ran out of time on the timer, or the quiz due date passed while you were still taking the quiz. If either of those happened, the Gradebook will also have the status "Time Expired" for that quiz.
What happens if I lose internet while taking a quiz?
1. If you did not close your quiz before reconnecting to the internet, your partially completed quiz score will be recorded and displayed.
2. If you lose connection to the internet before finishing the quiz, and then close your quiz before reconnecting, your quiz status will be "In Progress" in the Gradebook.
To clear out this status, you will need to retake the quiz. (If you do not have more attempts to use, or the quiz’s due date has passed, contact the instructor). Starting a new attempt causes this notification to clear out of the Gradebook. Your existing "In Progress" attempt will be closed out, but the score will be calculated and displayed when you start your new attempt. Both the first and second attempt scores will be visible in the Quiz Attempt Review screen.
